?: What is Steamracers?

!: Steam Racers is a free multiplayer UT3 total conversion. It can be summed up as an action racing game, in which you play against other human players.


?: What sets it apart from other racing games?
  • A race is won by reaching the point limit.
  • Points are earned either by passing checkpoints and completing laps, or by killing opponent players.
  • The 4 different vehicles can be upgraded in different categories by spending points.
  • Players can move around on foot as well, to enter other vehicles or turrets, and to collect and deploy mines.

?: Where does the game take place?

!: The year is 1888. Europe lies in ruins in the aftermath of the great Technology War, leaving only abandoned battlefields and a smoky horizon to be seen. Steam powered war machines lie scattered throughout the vast wasteland. In the midst of this tragic memorial to the past, something is amiss.

The repeated thumping of a steam engine echoes once again in the rusty scraps and steel pipes.

You, Lord Hunington Gearsprocket, are the most brilliant mind in the Gratitude for Assembled Steam engines (G.A.S.). With your fellow inventors, you have arranged a unique racing event. The track has been created using the features of the ruins as obstacles, and the racing vehicles have been engineered by using whatever leftovers of the war machines you could find. Now, it is time for another war to be fought – a war of steaming engines, bronze pipes and machine guns: Now is the time of Steam Racers!

Of course, you are not doing the dirty work yourself - no, you have people to do that; soldiers in fact. Now that the war is through, they have nothing better to do than drive your vehicle of destruction, while you take a sip from your cup of tea in the zeppelin high above the track. Oh, the joy of being in charge!


?: What is so special about the steam powered vehicles?

!: All four vehicles have the ability to fire an attached machinegun, and also to boost their speed immensely. Both of these abilities heat up the steam engine, and if the temperature rises too high, the engine will become unstable and the vehicle will take damage - eventually it will explode.


?: Who do I control?

!: You control a soldier, finding himself without a war to fight in. Luckily, some brilliant inventor hired you to you drive his latest invention - a magnificent steam powered vehicle - in a race for glory and fame. At least it beats sitting at home!

As a soldier, you can enter and exit both vehicles and turrets, as well as pick up ammo for the Magnetic Mine Launcher and the Flame Mine Launcher, and repair damaged vehicles with your Repair Hammer.


?: Who can I play against?

!: Since no bot would ever figure out how to drive a vehicle from the 19th century, Steam Racers is a pure multiplayer game, and can thus only be played against other players, either online or over LAN.


?: How do I install it?
  1. Install your UT3 and patch to the latest version (verified to work on patch 2.X)
  2. Download the zip-file from the download page on this website.
  3. Unpack the zip-file, and double-click on the installation file (Steam Racers Setup)
  4. Use the shortcut created on your desktop, and either host a game on the internet (or LAN) or find an existing one
  • The game will begin, when all players are present.
